Oakland students
were challenged to read 250,000 minutes over a 5-week period of time in order
to have a fun-filled “Reading for Treasures”
reading celebration day. Students
surpassed the goal by reading 260,682 minutes. On “Reading for
Treasures” day, Principal Rex Coates was “captured” by pirates and held in
captivity in a jail cell for the day.
As classes visited him throughout the day, they enjoyed hearing him
read How I Became a Pirate. Students dressed as pirates, and first
through fifth graders went on a treasure hunt for real treasures through the
Gem Mining for Education program.
Kindergarten students went on a special treasure hunt and used their
findings to make crowns.
Kindergarteners also participated in a “Go Fish” game. The school was elaborately decorated for
the day, and a special seafarer’s lunch was enjoyed by all.
