Reading

is

Magic!

There truly is magic in reading!

To celebrate Children’s Book Week and American Education Week, Oakland students were challenged by Mr. Coates to read a total of 200,000 minutes over a four-week period.  The students exceeded this goal by reading a total of 217,965 minutes!  We held a Reading is Magic! celebration on November 19th, 2001 during which a real magician cut Mr. Coates in half!  The school was decorated with a magical theme, and students came to school dressed that day as any magical or imaginary storybook character.  We had a magical lunch, as well as a magic show in which students actively participated.  It was truly a magical day to remember!  Thanks, parents, for monitoring students’ reading at home each evening.  Please continue to do this, as students need to continue reading at home on a daily basis in order to improve their reading skills.

Mrs. Shay introduced the idea of a “Reading is Magic” celebration to Oakland students.  She was confident that they could read 200,000 minutes in four weeks!

During the Reading is Magic! kick off, Mrs. Margie shared a few magic tricks with Oakland students and encouraged them to experience the magic of reading.
